Although the name is difficult to pronounce, its concept is simple. These are people who live with compulsive and exaggerated consumption, unable to control this desire to buy more and more.

What is oneomania?
Excessive purchases tend to be part of the behavior of the consumer. It turns out that oneomania is precisely the change in attitude where consumption becomes addiction. Something uncontrollable and capable of generating the same psychological sensations as any other addiction.
For example, shopping causes euphoria and constant pleasure. On the other hand, it generates restlessness, anxiety and sudden changes in mood when this need cannot be fulfilled.
But, in addition, it is important to highlight the effects of oneomania on a person's life: their financial health. This is because, when consumerism has lost any frontier of reason, the accumulation of debts is a common consequence.
Not for nothing, oneomania is popularly known as the compulsive shopping disease.
How to distinguish oneomania from a consumerist?
We highlighted above, some psychological sensations and rewards that the omnimaniac obtains with the purchase and also with the impossibility of complying with his ritual. And, therefore, we should not confuse oneomania with a simple consumerist desire.
After all, our current society lives with the act of consumption or with the awakening and nourishment of that desire. People are bombarded at all times by advertisements, trends and projections of what we will be able to buy in the short, medium and long term.
It turns out that these feelings tend to disappear over time. Whoever suffers from oneomania tends to mix emotions. After the purchase, the feeling of shame, frustration or even of repeating that purchase may arise, interfering with the reactions that a purchase can cause when meeting a need.
It is important, then, to understand if you are a (more or less) consumerist or if these habits have already started to become more than evident in your day-to-day decisions.

What signs can indicate that someone suffers from oneomania?
Some say that consumerism is a disease. But the problem goes further, in fact.
An example: people who spend more than they earn may be excess consumers, but without the challenge of stopping superfluous purchases, without a good conversation about financial education, they can become oniomanic.
In the case of the oniomaniac, some symptoms and signs can be observed to show how much, in these situations, there are signs of a disorder. See some of them, below:
- financial imbalance, which may be on the verge of bankruptcy and yet the person continues to consume, get into debt and participating in an endless cycle of purchases and debts;
- disagreements due to frustrated purchases, difficulty understanding warnings and conversations with friends and family;
- mood swings caused by the habit of consuming, exclusively;
- omission of purchases made (and also of accumulated debts);
- difficulty in focus and concentration – harming the routine in many ways in particular situations and also in the work routine, which can even cause layoffs;
- borrowing in an exaggerated manner – including, by illegal means, such as moneylenders.
In addition, the person with one or more of these symptoms may try to justify the problem in other ways, making it impossible for him to recognize the problem.
Excuses are common – like the invention of necessity for each of the purchases – or even as if it were a bonus (something like a merit). Justifications will not be lacking, so it is important to recognize the signs of oneomania in order to streamline the search for continuous and quality treatment.

Is there treatment for oneomania?
Because, as we are talking about a compulsive disease that is very similar to other addictions, it is important to treat it in a similar way taking into account the characteristics of each case and person.
But the good news is that there are already alternative treatment options for oneomania.
In general, they are solutions based on therapies (with psychologists or psychiatrists), which can be individual or even in groups, as usually happens in Alcoholics Anonymous.
It is worth emphasizing, however, that this treatment does not occur overnight and neither is it definitively resolved without good monitoring. Temptations will exist and it is important that loved ones of those who suffer from oneomania learn to deal with and control relapses – whether with support, firmness in their attitudes or even in helping to seek professional help again.
