It is sometimes said that coffee is the oil that keeps an organization running smoothly. That certainly applies to me. But it is actually the same with personal skills. Your organization consists of all kinds of rotating gears. Inadequate communication, wrong priorities and associated stress cause those gears to grind a lot.
A good manager will notice this and do something about it quickly. But what if it happens unnoticed and your company has actually ceased to function as that well-oiled machine you have in mind for a long time?
That feeling as an entrepreneur; you still remember the time when your company had just started and the four of you were sitting at a large table. Everything was so nice and simple. And now suddenly that realization that your organization has become unwieldy and slow, with processes that are not running smoothly.
How do you improve this situation?
There is sometimes a giggly atmosphere surrounding personal skills. Why would you also start training for something like communication? Something you have already learned as a child. And what about time management? As if you are not mature enough to manage your own time. Yes you will be able to communicate and organize your day yourself. But whether this is actually done in an effective way is the question. How much more effective can you become as a professional if your message actually gets across to your colleagues. How much more can you get done if you learn to prioritize and organize your day in such a way that you actually get the things you care about done, instead of letting noise and all sorts of things take up the best part of your day? emails?
The solution therefore lies in the first place with raising awareness and creating an environment within your company where value is attached to continuous development and continuous improvement. Not only because it is nice on the careers part of the website, but mainly because of the realization that, in order to get ahead (or perhaps to continue to exist in this day and age), everyone in your company is at his or her best must be.
How can you improve your skills?
By training and especially by continuing to train. Continuing to work on your professional skills and your personal skills is important. Professional training to keep up and improve yourself within your profession, and that includes personal skills. You can be the best in your profession on your own island, but the organization will only really benefit you if you can use your skills to strengthen the rest of the company.
